I started using Ubuntu Pro because my employer required support and licensing assurances for Linux systems. That got me into the ecosystem and I quickly found value beyond work. My homelab now runs entirely on Ubuntu, with four PCs and three Raspberry Pis on either Ubuntu Server or Desktop.

I use services like Livepatch and Landscape to manage everything. Even my sisters’ computers run Ubuntu now, and I support them remotely using DWService.

Are you involved in the Ubuntu or open source community?

I’ve always loved the peer-to-peer nature of it. Over the years, I’ve promoted Linux by showing people how it works, installing it for friends and family, and offering support. That’s been my way of giving back.

What first pushed you toward Linux?

Back in the early 2000s, we got a family computer running a different operating system and it had constant problems. I couldn’t print and browse the internet at the same time. Nothing worked until I tried a Linux distro from a magazine and everything just worked. That moment changed everything.

Since then, I’ve leaned into Linux fully. I joined a local user group in Quebec City, where I first encountered Ubuntu CDs being handed out, started using Ubuntu, and eventually began choosing jobs that allowed me to use Linux as my daily driver.

Do you use both the free and paid versions of Ubuntu?

Yes, I use both. I’ve activated Ubuntu Pro on personal emails and work accounts – it helps keep things clear with employers. It’s funny how many people still don’t realize you can use Linux on the desktop. When they find out I run Linux at work and home, it usually sparks some great conversations.

What made you choose Ubuntu Pro?

Livepatch and Landscape sealed the deal. They give me detailed control and visibility over all my machines  and peace of mind when it comes to Linux security, updates, and system health. Right now I’m looking at my main server. On the hardware page, you have the serial number, you have monitoring, you can launch scripts remotely, ensure packages are up to date.

There’s even an overview, like a little number three that tells me: one machine needs a reboot, three haven’t contacted Landscape within five minutes. It’s very detailed, granular monitoring and control.

I’m finding that amazing. It’s everything I need in one place.

How has Ubuntu Pro improved your workflow?

It makes everything more efficient. I use virtual desktops instead of multiple monitors, organized by task: work, personal browsing, documents, and terminals. It’s a smooth setup that helps me stay focused and productive.

With Ubuntu, I don’t deal with forced reboots or performance hiccups, which is critical when you’re in a meeting or deep in a task. It just works, and that reliability saves time and reduces frustration.

If you could sum it up, what’s Ubuntu Pro’s biggest value to you?

Stability, control, and peace of mind. I use it every day, and I’m always discovering new ways it makes my setup better. It’s been a winning formula for me. No reason to change.
