VirtualBox 7.2.0 RC1 is Available for Testing

VirtualBox 7.2.0 RC1, the third development release for the next major version of Oracle’s virtualization software, is available to download few days ago.

Compare to the last Beta, the RC1 release added explicit unattended installation support for Oracle Linux 10, while others are mostly bug-fixes.

VirtualBox 7.2.0 is the new feature release, that might be available in next few months (September or October according to previous feature releases).

It so far features redesigned the Manager UI with left side-bar, making easy to navigate between Machines, Extensions, Media, Network, Cloud, Resources, as well as Home to get started.

It added virtualization and guest additions support for Windows 11 ARM, as well as ACPI, Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) graphics driver, and share folder features for Windows on ARM VM.

Other changes include xsave/xrestor instruction handling for better multi-tasking support when using Windows Hyper-V as the virtualization engine, and improved keyboard LED handling in Soft Keyboard. For more, see Beta 1 and Beta 2 release note.

For this RC1 release, besides unattended installation for Oracle Linux 10, it also includes following changes:

• Fix X86_64-v3 features not passed to the guest.
• Fix VM not start when using Hyper-V on older Intel CPUs.
• Fix that clone VM wizard not able to include snapshots in clone result.
• Fix audio crash in rare circumstances.
• Fix possible crash when no name-servers could be detected in host
• Fix OVF/OVA import which causes a broken VM on Arm.
• Fix crash when exporting VM with an inaccessible disk.
• Improve Windows drivers installation on Windows host.
• Fix guest additions auto-run installer not start automatically on ISO image insert for Oracle Linux 10 and RHEL 10.
• Fix macOS kernel logging over serial port.

Get VirtualBox 7.2.0 RC1

NOTE: as a development release, this RC may be NOT compatible with the current 7.1 release. Please shut down (and backup if possible) all VMs before upgrading to 7.2.

The official installer packages for Windows, macOS, Linux (.rpm / .deb), along with guest additions are available to download at the link below:

For Ubuntu users, select download the .deb package, then click open with either App Center or Ubuntu Software and install.

So far, it supports Ubuntu 20.04 (Focal), Ubuntu 22.04 (Jammy), Ubuntu 24.04 (Noble), and Ubuntu 24.10 (Oracular). And, you may run cat /etc/os-release command to tell your system code-name and which Linux Distribution it’s based on.
